Tamil Nadu Achieves Milestone as Wind and Solar Power Supply Majority of Electricity

Tamil Nadu has set a new benchmark by meeting most of its power demand through wind and solar energy, showcasing the state’s renewable strength. This achievement highlights India’s growing shift toward clean and sustainable electricity.

Tamil Nadu Achieves Milestone as Wind and Solar Power Supply

Tamil Nadu has yet perpetuated its reputation of being the renewable energy leader in India by attaining a historic high point in the state of meeting the largest portion of its electricity needs with wind and solar, a number which has been estimated to currently amount to a whopping 65 percent with the rest being met by traditional generation sources such as coal. In August 16, 2025, the state observed a record supply with over half of that supply consumed using clean energy taking the center stage in integration of clean energy into the power grid.

Based on figures provided in the Tamil Nadu Power Load Despatch centre (TNPDCL), the state used close to 336.85 million units (MUs) of electricity on the day, of which 167 MUs were renewable on their own. This is a historic milestone in the state that has been a continual leader in the installation of wind power and now making a massive renewable energy push into the realm of solar.

Wind Power: The Driving Force

Wind energy was the major contributor, generating a record 123.85 MUs in a single day. The state also recorded a record generation of 5,915 MW, breaking previous highs. Also, the 5th of August was the 26th day in 2025 where wind generated over 100 MUs, confirming the reliability of wind generation in Tamil Nadu and areas such as Muppandal, Kayathar and Aralvaimozhi.

Solar Power: Continuing Trends

Solar power generated 43.10 MUs on that day, despite some intermittence from clouds passing through. Early in August, on the 6th to be precise, Tamil Nadu's solar generation peaked at 49.3 MUs and peaked at 6,731 MW. With solar capacity now reaching over 10,600 MW, Tamil Nadu is continuing to make use of its enormous solar contribution, despite estimates showing that less than 1% of its estimated total solar generation of over 1.29 lakh MW is being exploited.

Smarter Grid Management

What made this feat possible was effective grid management. The TNPDCL temporarily unloaded certain thermal power plants to allow for the priority of renewable evacuation of all available wind and solar power. This demonstrates a significant change in the operation tradition of the grid, showing that it is possible for Tamil Nadu to capitalize on high levels of variable renewable power without uncertainty to reliability.

Importance for India’s Energy Future

Tamil Nadu's success sends a clear signal for India's clean energy transition. The state has shown that renewables can replace and exceed electricity supply during the day. Therefore, the state provided an example that others will want to replicate. This success decreases reliance on fossil fuels, lowers carbon in the atmosphere, and consolidates energy security as therefore energy independence for a rising economy.

As renewables continue to grow, Tamil Nadu is expected to lead the way with respect to developing India's renewable energy market for its 2070 net-zero targets, as it is a symbol of sustainable progress.
