Rooftop Solar in India to Hit a New Milestone in 2025

India’s rooftop solar market is witnessing a powerful surge, and 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year. With supportive government policies, rising energy prices, and increasing consumer awareness, rooftop solar installations are on track to hit nearly 15 GW - and the momentum isn’t slowing down.

Record Growth in Q1 2025

In the first quarter of FY25 alone, India added 1.2 GW of rooftop solar capacity - a stunning 232% increase compared to the same period last year. What’s driving this growth? The answer lies in strong residential participation and government initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

Under this scheme, the government is targeting over 1 crore households to get subsidized rooftop solar systems - making clean energy accessible, affordable, and in some cases, free.

Residential Sector Leads the Way

Residential installations now contribute to nearly 78% of new rooftop solar capacity. With simple online application systems and generous central subsidies, more homeowners are choosing to cut down their electricity bills and switch to green power.

For example, in Gujarat alone, over 3.3 lakh rooftop systems have been installed, generating more than 1,834 million units of electricity - and saving tons of coal and CO₂ emissions in the process.

The Bigger Picture: India’s Solar Goals

On March 2025, the overall capacity of rooftop solar in India was 14.9 GW. Such dominance may increase to 25-30 GW by FY27, as industry estimates indicate. This would assist India to make a small step towards achieving its 500 GW non-fossil fuel generation capacity target by 2030.

Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sector is also paramount in this case since it occupies more than 66 percent of the total market share. Rooftop solar is even being adopted by factories and offices as grid tariffs increase and they have improved access to financing.

Urban India Goes Solar

Cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Chennai are rapidly transforming into solar cities. In Delhi, over 10,000 rooftop solar connections are now energised, allowing consumers to collectively save over ₹160 crore yearly.

What’s next?

India must address some important challenges in order to sustain this trajectory:

  • Delays in subsidy disbursal
  • Technical integration with DISCOMs
  • Tier 2 Tier 3 cities awareness creation

Provided that the policy support will be maintained further, storage batteries will get enhanced and solar + EV integrations will stay on the agenda, rooftop solar is likely to keep being one of the most rapidly expanding renewable energy expedition branches in India.

Key messages

  • 1.2 GW of rooftop solar installed in Q1 FY25 (232% YoY)
  • Residential sector driving new capacity with 78%
  • 14.9 GW cumulative rooftop capacity installed at March 2025
  • Forecast: 25 - 30 GW by FY27
  • PM Surya Ghar Scheme preparing households to adopt
  • Massive savings achieved in cities like Delhi and Gujarat

Rooftop solar isn't just an environmentally-conscious option. It's now a financially-sound alternative as well. With India's government-friendly policies, and tech-savvy citizens, the vision of homes for all powered by solar energy becomes even more of a reality.
