₹135 Crore PM-KUSUM Solar Pump Order Powers Maharashtra’s Green Agriculture

Maharashtra has awarded a ₹135 crore PM-KUSUM solar pump order to Jain Irrigation. The project will deploy 5,438 pumps, boosting green agriculture.

PM-KUSUM

Maharashtra has taken further a great step towards clean energy and farmers empowerment by announcing an order of ₹135 crore for the solar pump plants under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM B) scheme. This order was given by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) who has awarded this project to Jain Irrigation Systems Limited as one of India’s leading agri-tech and irrigation solution companies.

Project Details

The new order covers the design, supply, transport, installation, testing, and commissioning of 5,438 off-grid solar photovoltaic water pumps across the state. These pumps will come in different capacities 3 HP, 5 HP, and 7.5 HP tailored to the diverse needs of Maharashtra’s farmers.

Jain Irrigation has previously engaged with PM-KUSUM B. In December 2024, Jain Irrigation completed Phase I, supplying 4,180 solar pumps worth ₹103 crore. This new order plays to the strengths of Jain Irrigation and the commitment from the government to renewable-powered farming.

Why It Matters

Indian agriculture continues to rely on diesel-pump or unreliable grid-technology based pumps. The farmers can obtain clean, reliable, and affordable irrigation by the use of solar pumps. In the long term, it will result in a lower consumption of diesel, appeal to electricity subsidies and add to the climate objectives of India.

The move is a win-win to Maharashtra, which is already challenged by water and power shortages across rural belts on a recurring basis:

  • Energy Savings – Solar pumps save on conventional power requirements.
  • Farmer Empowerment – Renewable irrigation enhances stability of income and crop production.
  • Environmental Advantages – Usage of clean energy reduces working level and helps sustainability goals.
Economic/Market Impact

The order goes beyond its agricultural importance as it also impacts the renewable energy market sector and the equity markets. As a penny stock trading below the 60 mark on NSE, Jain Irrigation stocks grew with a trend of 17-20 percent after the announcement due to the investor confidence that the company is building a significant solar portfolio.

The Road Ahead

With the ₹135 crore order, Maharashtra has established itself as a clear leader in the adoption and implementation of PM-KUSUM. Scaling of solar irrigation solutions implies that the government has guaranteed livelihood of farmers and has quickly assisted India in moving towards sustainable economy.

This is not just about finding an investment in infrastructure, it is a promise to a dream: A dream that farmers are benefitting by using the power of the sun to irrigate fields, to a rural India taking the lead on clean energy installations, and a vision of higher agricultural growth and a more sustainable future being inseparable.
